The risks of texting and driving.
Despite the evidence, most drivers do not believe in
the risk of texting and driving. Despite new evidence that sending text
messages while driving can be as or more dangerous as driving while drunk, most
drivers - especially teenagers - do not see it as a threat. A new study by
State Farm insurer Harris Interactive revealed that fewer teens consider
sending text messages while driving a vehicle will result in fatal consequences
if they drive while intoxicated. This is despite the fact that more than
200,000 accidents occur every year in the United States for driving and
texting. Only 36% of teenagers between the ages of 14 and 17 who pretend to
have or already have their driver's license, strongly agree with the statement
that they will one day be killed if they routinely drive a vehicle while
texting. While 55% agree very strongly with the idea that driving while
intoxicated could be lethal.
